What to Wear to an Interview

Your job interview starts the moment you walk in the door. Before they even ask the first question, your interviewer has already begun formulating their impression of you. That’s why it’s so important to dress correctly for your interview. Your appearance and that first impression you make may mean the difference between getting the job and getting passed over.

1. Whatever position you’re applying for, it’s always a good idea to go to the building a day or two before your interview and just observe what the current employees are wearing. This will give you an idea of what the company’s normal dress code is.

2. When you go for your interview, dress a bit more sharply than seems normal for the company. If you’re applying at a company that prefers business casual, wear a suit. If you’re applying for a factory job or service job with a uniform, wear business casual. Dressing above the standard will make you stand out from the rest. Be careful not to overdress, however, as this will make the interviewer feel that you are overqualified for the position they’re offering and wouldn’t stay with the company long term.

I love the hint about staking out the office to see what other employees are wearing. This gives you a good place to start dressing just a bit above the normal.

Yes, doing some research before doing anything is warm welcomed. Even if you are experienced in job interviews you should go 2 days before and check the company
