Job Interview Tips

When you go for your next job interview, it’s important to prepare not only for the interview questions, but for the entire interview process as a whole. A few days ahead of time, you should begin to think about how you can make the best impression on your prospective employer. Here are some of the most important job interview tips that can help give you the advantage you need.

1. Research the company and position you’re applying for. Think about what will be expected of you and be prepared to talk about specific ways you would be an asset to the company. Be prepared to answer a myriad of interview questions with straight and concise answers. Brainstorm some ways that you’ve had experience doing the same or similar tasks that your new position will require. Even if you haven’t had job prior job experience in that area, try to name some things about your personality that would make you a good match for the position. Be as detailed and give as much information as possible. Your interviewer needs to know that you’re the best person for the job and it’s up to you to convince them of that.

2. Plan what you’re going to say. Some people do great speaking extemporaneously, but most of us would do well to organize our thoughts beforehand. Try to think of some things that your interviewer is likely to ask and plan out how you would respond. Many interviewers will give you an opportunity to tell them about yourself. Decide beforehand how you can answer that in a few poignant sentences. Prepare a little speech about the positives of your personality and the highlights of your work, volunteer, or educational history.

3. Give details. When you talk about your past experience, education, and assets that you bring to the job, be as specific as possible. Don’t just say things like, “I’m a good worker,” or “I like to work with customers.” Give examples of what those things mean. If you consider yourself a good worker, tell what you do to be a good worker. If you like working with customers, tell your interviewer why and what types of things you do for your customers. Be prepared to tell a story or two about times when you helped a specific customer and why you enjoyed doing it.

4. Watch your body language. Make sure you’re smiling, sitting up straight, and look relaxed rather than nervous. Don’t fidget. If you can do this, your body language will communicate to your interviewer that you are a positive, serious, confident person.
